Background

The  building industry in Denmark has in recent years analysed its own productivity - an analysis that showed that building productivity is poor in comparison with other industries and against an international benchmark.

A necessary precondition for development and improved productivity through industrialisation of the construction sector, is the establishment of a new partnership all the way through the chain of values from  building owners to design, education, development, production and delivery. VIB supports and is involved in the strategic consortium for industrial development and production with knowledge and research institutions, with particular  reference to the construction sector.

Industrialisation of the building methodology  points to new business models. The move is away from individual project solutions and towards mass customisation of building production. This will mean the building process starts under one roof with the production of components, which are then assembled on site. Such a development  would be a break with a long tradition in Danish building - from craft to industrial production.

Profile

The knowledge centre for industrial building (VIB) was established in September 2006 through a collaboration between  North Jutland's Academy of Professional Higher Education and the Academy of Professional Higher Education in Odense. The aim is to put the development of competence and innovation on the agenda  for industrial building. With this cross-trade agreement, the two educational institutions have taken the initative to increase the focus on education, research and networking in the building industry.

VIB`s vision is to establish itself as an essential partner in the working relationship, when the subject is the development of industrial products and processes in the building industry. Its mission is to seek out , collect, prepare and spread knowledge about industrial building, to ensure purposeful implementation and improved education.

VIB aims

  • to promote and take part in development projects in the building industry, in collaboration with the trade and research   institutions.
  • to enter into a network with national and international research and knowledge institutions, on the understanding that VIB have “state of the art” knowledge in industrial building - or knows where this knowledge can be found.
  • to secure development of building education in a focussed area of industrial building.
